Statement

In life: the rivalry between parents and children may be inevitable – with children destined to surpass their parents. But feminist theorists like Simone de Beauvoir and Luce Irigaray were prophetic when they noticed that mother-daughter relations were especially vexed under patriarchy. Why would a girl want to inherit and take over the imminent and powerless position of her mother? With little opportunity to transcend her socially constructed position as a sexual or maternal object, young girls (still) have few chances to make more of their lives than what they were given.

Women who reject the notion that their lot in life was a done deal produced the artwork in this exhibition.

Curatorial Concept

What encourages the artists to keep creating? One exhibition with impulse does not constitute a complete success for the artist. What inspires artists keep creating is their passion for art. Our exhibition, Rose-colored Glasses, includes three elements: firstly, it gathers ten young contemporary artists from Wuhan who expresses their passion and love through visual art. Secondly, all of the artworks showcased in this exhibition are made by female artists. Still, they do not necessarily focus on feminism or female perspectives, which clears up the general confusion and misunderstanding of “gender” in contemporary art. Finally, this exhibition is titled Rose-colored Glasses. Through the two perspectives through “gender” and “identity,” the exhibition explores a variety of identities in contemporary art creation. As mentioned above, since we want to eliminate binary-genders’ antagonism issues, we should also stop the “female perspective.” In contemporary art, what we emphasize is the diversity of gender and self-identity. The participating artists play many roles in life: daughters, mothers, teachers, wives, etc. However, in this exhibition, they represent a single role: a contemporary artist.
